Martin O'Neill was the pantomime ex-Villan on Saturday, but it is current Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish who will be braced for the boos if his side fail to perform in this relegation encounter.

“We have got four games to go and we have got to try and take points in every game”

Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish

A win for second-bottom Bolton would bring them to within three points of Villa and with a game in hand. Look behind you, Alex!

The returning O'Neill took the flak at the weekend from Villa supporters unimpressed by his abrupt departure on the eve of last season.

Neither have those fans been in the mood to provide home comfort for McLeish and his side all season. It's hardly surprising: Villa have only won four of their 17 league games at Villa Park and scored a mere 18 goals, the lowest tally in the top flight.

Their failings were encapsulated in the goalless draw with Sunderland at the weekend, when they began well and wasted a flurry of chances before the supporters grew restless and nerves set in.

Bolton's need for points is greater still, given that they are four points from safety. This fixture - originally postponed a month ago in the wake of Fabrice Muamba's cardiac arrest - is one of two matches they have in hand on the three sides immediately above them. Wanderers will kick off against Villa with their fate in their own hands, but that will no longer remain the case if they return empty handed.
